The structure of I Ching

I Ching consists of 64 guas and 384 yaos. There are two special yaos in addition, so, 386 yaos in total. A gua or hexagram is composed of six yin and yang lines, arranged from the bottom to the top one by one (each line is called yao in Chinese). Yin (The symbol is broken line like , expressed 0 here in this Home Page) represents feminine, weakness, capacity, woman, the earth, even number and the receiver of energy. Yang (The symbol is solid line like , expressed 1 here in this Home Page) represents masculine, strength, development, man, the heaven, odd number and the donor of energy.

All the 64 guas and the yaos of each gua have the interpretation or the decision. A gua may relate to another through the change of one or more lines, or yaos. The methodology of the change will be explained in detail later. One of the "ritual numbers", 6, 7, 8 or 9 is assigned by the divination procedure to each of the six yaos in the gua. 6 and 8 are assigned to yin, 7 and 9 to yang. Why 6 and 8 to yin? Because they are broken or divided into two, which means weak, or yin. The 6 and 9 have tendency to change to 7 and 8 respectively. 7 and 8 have tendency to remain the same, or stable. This is much like a quantum leap in quantum mechanics. 7 and 8 are ground states.

In general, it is the lines that change that yield specific interpretation in I Ching. So, in I Ching, Yin is named Six and Yang is Nine. In a gua, for instance, the first or bottom yao is called "Initial Six" or "Initial Nine" corresponding to yin or yang. The second is "Second Six" or "Second Nine", and so forth. The sixth one is called "Top". Because it is up-most in a gua.

With three yaos piled up one by one, called eight little guas or trigrams, the I Ching categorizes them according to the scene or character of nature, members in a typical family. The eight trigrams and the meanings are shown in the following tables respectively.

Trigrams(3rdĽ2ndĽ1st) Symbol Family Character Image
Qian(yang,yang,yang; 1,1,1) Heaven Father Initiation
Dui(yin,yang,yang; 0,1,1) Lake 3rd Daughter Joyful
Li(yang,yin,yang; 1,0,1) Fire 2nd Daughter Brightness
Zhen(yin,yin,yang; 0,0,1) Thunder 1st Son Taking Action
Xun(yang,yang,yin; 1,1,0) Wind 1st Daughter Humbleness
Kan(yin,yang,yin; 0,1,0) Water 2nd Son Darkness
Gen(yang,yin,yin; 1,0,0) Mountain 3rd Son Keeping Still
Kun(yin,yin,yin; 0,0,0) Earth Mother Response

The 64 guas can be done by piling up the two little guas or trigrams. This composes the entire gua of the I Ching. The row shows upper trigram and the column shows lower trigram.

How to read the Gua is shown in the case of Replenishing(48) as an example. This Gua was obtained in April 1999 immediately after ordered to return home in haste while the author was residing in the United States, and still has some kind of special deep emotion.

Replenishing is composed of water (Upper trigram) and wind (Lower Trigram). It is the 48th Gua in I Ching, meaning the Well originally. The preceding Gua (47th Gua) is Exhausting which means difficulty and hardship. The next Gua is Abolishing the Old (49th Gua) which means revolution. Thus, the Sequence of the Replenishing says; Those who are exhausted from Growing Upward (meaning of the 46th Gua) are sure to return back to the lower. Then, the Sequence of the Abolishing the old says; The silt at the bottom of the well needs to be removed, which means needs revolution. So, between hardship and revolution, you need to reflect and deepen yourself and study something new, preparing for the coming revolution. This is the real meaning of this divination. Are these full of making sense?

I was so surprised at the result of my consulting the I Ching since the result represented my situation at that time very well. I understood from the divination that it was essential to endure anyway and to pile up the cultivation to deepen myself more. I took the nick name "Cold Spring (Fifth Yao)" from this Gua to remind me to become useful to others in the society and started the development of this QI-CHING seriously, aiming to prevail this useful consulting system world wide.

Please take a look at Replenishing(48) again. From the first six to the top six, you can feel the stage transition according to time development. Personally, I compare the first yao to under 20 years old, the second to 20 - 30, the third to 30-40, the fourth 40-50, the fifth 50-65 and the top to over 65 years old respectively. If you were a business person, then the first yao to workers, the second to the section manager, the third to the department manager, the fourth to the board member, the fifth to CEO and the top to the chairperson respectively.

(Coffee Break)

The passage of time is naturally built into the I Ching as you see above. The I Ching book is composed of the upper canon, consisting of 30 guas, which starts from Initiating and ends up Brightness and the lower canon, consisting of 34 guas, from Mutual Influence to Not Yet Fulfilled. Each of 64 guas is sequentially displayed according to the providence of humanity or the operation of the nature.

The number of the order is shown in the above-mentioned table. One can see a certain kind of rule in the order. The consecutive two guas makes a pair, much like a Cooper pair of Superconductivity in Physics. For instance, from (Initiating and Responding; 111111 and 000000),(Beginning and Childhood; 010001 and 100010), and so forth to (Already Fulfilled and Not Yet Fulfilled; 010101 and 101010), 32 pairs of the gua are composed. The law to make one pair is the reverse order of yaos from the previous ones. See the relation of (Beginning and Childhood; 010001 and 100010) and (Already Fulfilled and Not Yet Fulfilled; 010101 and 101010). If the reverse is the same as the original, like Initiating; 111111, take the entire opposite. So, Initiating becomes a pair with Responding; 000000. (Darkness and Brightness; 010010 and 101101) is the another example of the reverse same.

The author cannot yet figure out how a pair moves to the next pair. For instance, in the above-mentioned example, what is the basic rule to move from Responding to Beginning? If somebody knows it already, please be advised to me. It is a big research topic, I think.
